Our art is a combination of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander techniques, mainly from Cape York Peninsula & Torres Strait Islander’s. The colours & styles of the both forms of art are different from the mainstream indigenous art, whilst the Aboriginal legends and dream deal mainly of land & sky. The islander art of cause is of islands – sea – sky and every day island life – legends both cultures are similar yet different.
As an artist of indigenous paintings I have spent years with both Aboriginal & Islander communities throughout Cape York & Torres Strait islands where I was honored & privileged to have been passed on some of their legends – Cultural and day to day stories and dreaming’s, both the aboriginal (Gadang) tribe and Islander (Kacriag) tribe of central and Western Torres Strait were two of the most feared and proudest warrior clans of the aboriginal islander culture and traded – lived and intermarried into each other’s communities.
This was a great honor and experience for me and I hope my paintings do them justice in my portrait of their legends – customs – day to day stories and dreaming’s.Uncle Ron, Yahya.
